Pupils will learn and enjoy physical activity and sport.
They will gain understanding of how it benefits both their physical and mental health.
Pupils will develop skills to enable them to participate and lead effectively, safely and with confidence in a number of activities in, out and beyond school. This will in turn develop a positive culture towards participation in exercise, physical activity and sport.
Through sport, pupils will develop character, explicitly experiencing the values responsibility, teamwork, communication, creativity, resilience, determination and tolerance.
By the end of Key Stage 4, we hope pupils will achieve the 10 successful Physical Education Outcomes:
– have confidence to take part in exercise, physical activity or sport of their choice.
– have sufficient physical literacy in a range of movements and skills to participate effectively.
– have knowledge of a variety of sports and activities allowing at least entry to local provision.
– have experienced competitive sport, through either intra or inter school competition.
– understand how to safely participate with base knowledge of warm ups, cool downs and sport specific safety guidelines.
– understand there is a range of physical fitness by knowing a range of components of fitness.
– understand how regular, lifelong physical activity, regardless of ability, can improve mental health.
– have had opportunity to study Physical Education further at Key Stage 4 through a GCSE or equivalent qualification in preparation for any further studies at Key Stage 5.
– have had opportunity to take part in a range of extra-curricular provision, including clubs, fixtures and trips, such as regular ski trips.
– can demonstrate responsibility, teamwork, communication, creativity, resilience, determination and tolerance.
To meet this intent, pupils 5 year PE curriculum at Iceni Academy is split into 3 steps.
Step 1: Foundations
The first time pupils are taught a sport or activity, most likely in Year 7 or 8.
Skills and Knowledge: Pupils will embed the physical development and skills learned in Key Stage 1 and 2. Pupils will be introduced to a range of specific core sports skills and tactics with the aim to start mastering these and enhance enjoyment of formal sports and activities. Pupils will develop specific knowledge of warming up and why it is important.
Character: Pupils will become familiar with the 7 Character Values and understand their worth in sport by demonstrating them.
Culture: Pupils will demonstrate engagement in the subject and physical activity. Pupils will have the opportunity to attend a number of extra-curricular clubs and be made aware of local sports clubs. They will start to take these opportunities up as part of a healthy active lifestyle. Pupils will positively represent their Community at Sports Day and other Community competitions.
Step 2: Extending
The second time pupils are taught a sport or activity, most likely in Year 9 or 10.
Skills and Knowledge: Pupils will extend their physical development and skills learned in ‘Step 1’ of Key Stage 3. Pupils will revisit sports and activities for at least the second time. Pupils will improve the consistency of their performance of specific core sports skills and tactics, whilst learning more advanced skills and tactics to extend their ability within that sport or activity. Pupils will be able to lead warms ups, including pulse raisers, static and dynamic stretches, and skill rehearsal. Pupils will develop knowledge of what a cool down is and why this is important.
Character: Pupils will begin to display the 7 Character Values, often without prompt. Pupils will understand their worth both in sport and wider society.
Culture: Pupils will demonstrate engagement in the subject and physical activity. Pupils will have the opportunity to attend a number of extra-curricular clubs and be made aware of local sports clubs. They will start/continue to take these opportunities up as part of a healthy active lifestyle. Pupils will positively represent their Community at Sports Day and other Community competitions. Pupils will also be made aware of further sport activity opportunities within the school, such as Sports Science, Ski Trips and OAA Trips with the hope they will choose to take up these opportunities.
Step 3: Lifelong Engagement
Using skills and knowledge learnt in Steps 1 and 2 to positively select activities to engage in as part of a healthy, active lifestyle as a Year 11 student and beyond.
Skills and Knowledge: Pupils will engage and utilise their physical development and skills learned in ‘Step 2’ of Key Stage 3/4 to be positively active participates in activities of their preference. Pupils will select a pathway of their preference, choosing from a traditional pathway, exercise pathway, social pathway and alternative pathway. Pupils will use their skill and tactical competence to be effective participants, whilst learning more advanced skills and tactics to extend their ability within that sport or activity where appropriate.
Character: Pupils will be expected to display the 7 Character Values, often without prompt. Pupils will understand their worth both in sport and wider society.
Culture: Pupils will demonstrate engagement in the subject and physical activity. Pupils will start to have ownership of the activities they select in PE (where possible) to ensure high activity rates in class. Pupils will have the opportunity to attend a number of extra curricular clubs and be made aware of local sports clubs. They will start/continue to take these opportunities up as part of a healthy active lifestyle. Pupils will positively represent their College competitions. Pupils will be aware of further sport activity opportunities within the school, Ski Trips and OAA Trips with the hope they will choose to take up these opportunities. Alongside Core PE, it is hoped a good number of pupils will be following a level 2 based qualification, such as GCSE PE or a Cambridge National. Pupils will also have opportunities to begin leading in Sport, including Sport Prefect/Minister roles.
